Where can we be part of the project

The Mantalk project is one way to help men stay active and engaged in their community. We want to keep older men active mentally and physically in their senior years. We are providing an opportunity for men to meet and talk about what is going on in their lives.

We will provide men an opportunity to look at the computer to help them in finding ways of living better and healthier lives. We will also be looking at ways to incorporate successful projects from other parts of the world and decide what might work here in Burnaby.

If you have any further questions you can put in a comment here here or send an email to djlacroix@alumni.sfu.ca

The Mantalk programme coordinator, David Lacroix, has been visiting various seniors residencies to give presentations on topics that are deemed interesting to the men there.  These sessions provide  oppotunities for the men to gather together and participate in conversation and discussion.

A presentation on historic shipwreck lore and sunkened treasure coins was given at the George Derby Veterans Centre on January 18, 2012.  Below are some pictures taken of the presentation.

Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy Presentation at the George Derby Centre

On November 23, Veterans Affairs Canada and the Canadian Football League (CFL) presented the second annual Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy to Andre Durie of the Toronto Argonauts at a special ceremony at the George Derby Centre.  The presentation was held with many residents in attendance and there was a live broadcast of the ceremony in the living areas throughout the centre for those residents who were unable to attend in person.

David LaCroix from the Mantalk program was in attendance and he assisted with the seniors so they could have their photos taken with the Grey Cup and the Jake Gaudaur Veteran's Trophy after the presentation ceremony.

The Men Shed Movement

The Man Talk project is inspired by the world-wide Men Shed movement.  This movement attempts to enhance retired and older men’s lives and well being in the community by workshop-based activities and/or providing drop-in centres where they can meet and socialise with other men.  Although it started out as an initiative to reach out to older isolated men, senior women are most welcomed to participate in Shed acitvities too.

The Shed movement started in Australia and it is most active there but interest in the Shed concept is growing in other countries like New Zealand, Ireland, England and Canada.  At present the Shed movement in Australia is represented mainly by the Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA) which also acts as a communications hub for the movement worldwide through its website and regular newsletters.  In 2010 the Australian Government provided four years of funding (A$3.3 million) through the Department of Health and Ageing for the national coordination of sheds through the AMSA.   For more information on the Shed movement, please refer to the AMSA website.

The Memory Project

There is a Federal-funded project to be undertaken at the George Derby Centre called "The Memory Project" whereby Dr. Alexander Herd will be recording for posterity the veterans' memories from their WWII service.  These details will be stored in Ottawa and will be available for reference in the future.  The ManTalk coordinator, David LaCroix, has requested to be included in the facilitating of this project in any way that is helpful.
